Renaissance is more than a line of fashion accessories; it is a movement that traverses from and through the rich past of the African American’s creativity, innovation, strength, perseverance fashion and style, which is known today as swag. The name itself is inspired by the “Harlem Renaissance.” The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual, social, and artistic explosion centered in Harlem, New York, spanning the 1920’s. It was previously called “The New Negro Movement”, named after The New Negro, a 1925 anthology edited by Alain Locke. Embedded in the logo is a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward carrying a precious egg in its mouth. That egg represents everything that is good from our past. This is one image used to represent Sankofa. Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates to "Go back and get it." We are doing just that: reclaiming all that is good from our past, reinventing our current narrative of what it means to be black, and sparking the rebirth of cool.
Our stylists have curated Black Star Box’s which include several accessories that are color coordinated and designed to take the guess work out of having to put together eye catching outfits that make bold statements. Even the name of this box in rooted in our rich history. Black Star Line was a shipping line incorporated by Marcus Garvey, the organizer of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, and other members of the UNIA. The shipping line was created to facilitate the transportation of goods and eventually African Americans throughout the African global economy in 1919. Everything about Renaissance is done with intention. In addition to the popping accessories each Black Star Box is filled with, it also has information about African Americans who had, and currently have profound impacts on history and change makers. We at Renaissance believe that looking good on the outside is only a reflection of what’s on the inside. We’re helping to fill each patron with knowledge of what Africans in diaspora have contributed to the world and by doing so countering the narrative that we see all too often in the media.
